Colombo, June 2 (Daily Mirror) - The recent arrest of an individual popularly known as “Dubai Sudda” should not be viewed merely as a sensational social media controversy or an opportunity for personal attacks, but rather as a serious warning highlighting long-standing structural weaknesses within Sri Lanka’s overseas employment and migrant worker recruitment system.

Commenting on the issue, United Vision Platform Founder Azzam Muhammedh said the incident must be understood in a broader context of regulatory failure and systemic gaps in the foreign employment sector.

“Foreign employment is not an ordinary trade. It directly affects human lives, families, migration safety, and the country’s foreign remittance economy,” he said.

Muhammedh highlighted that the situation should not be reduced to individual blame alone, but should instead prompt a national-level review of how unauthorized recruitment practices continue to operate alongside licensed agencies.

He further said that public influence and social media popularity must not be allowed to override legal requirements and regulatory accountability in overseas employment recruitment.

According to him, the current situation highlights the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms, improved monitoring by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), and tighter controls on recruitment advertising conducted through online platforms.

Muhammedh added that licensed agencies continue to face operational and reputational challenges due to the activities of unregulated actors, despite operating under strict legal frameworks.

He said that the incident should serve as a warning sign and an opportunity for reform rather than public controversy, calling for stronger cooperation between regulators, licensed agencies, and policymakers to restore trust and integrity in the industry.
