Colombo, May 26 (Daily Mirror) - Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara has called for the implementation of a joint institutional plan for the regular maintenance of reservoirs, canals and walkways in Colombo and surrounding urban areas.
He made the remarks during a field inspection conducted yesterday to observe renovation work at the Thalawathugoda Reservoir and inspect the condition of nearby canals and walkways within the Maharagama Urban Council area.
During the inspection, the Deputy Minister instructed officials of the Urban Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation to jointly implement sustainable maintenance work under a unified plan.
Gunasekara said the inspection was carried out in response to complaints from residents over the lack of proper maintenance in the area for a prolonged period. He stressed the need for both short-term and long-term measures to transform the areas into cleaner and more environmentally friendly public spaces.
Among those who joined the inspection were Devananda Suraweera, Urban Development Authority Director (Land Development) H.W. Somaratne, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation Deputy General Manager Engineer S.P. Muthumala, Maharagama Urban Council member Sarath Samarawickrama and several other officials.
