Constitutional Council to call applications for Independent Commissions

Constitutional Council is to call up for applications from suitable members for the independent commissions today amidst protests by Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa who is an ex-officio member of the Council.

Parliament media unit said an advertisement would be carried in newspapers today ( February 1 2023 )  calling for applications from suitable persons to function as members for the independent commissions as of article 41 (B) of the constitution Closing date for applications will close on February 15 2023.

Mr. Premadasa said he has objected to  the move by the constitutional council to call up for applications from potential members to the election commission as it would be a violation of the constitution. “ The local government election would be in jeopardy if applications are called for new members of the election commission,” he said.(Yohan Perera)
