Arugam Bay alleged sexual assault: Police hunt suspect

Pottuvil Police are appealing to the public for assistance in locating a suspect involved in an alleged sexual assault of a foreign woman in the Arugam Bay area on October 25.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and urged anyone with information to contact the Pottuvil Police Station at 063 2248022 or the Pottuvil Police OIC at 071 8591168.

The investigation launched after a video showing a foreign female tourist being sexually harassed by a Sri Lankan man has gone viral on social media.

The tourist, who had been driving a tuk-tuk reportedly encountered the man after she stopped the vehicle. In the video, the man is seen exposing his genitals and attempting to sexually harass her. 

The tourist is heard expressing fear and shock over the incident.

She had been recording her surroundings during her travels and captured the incident on camera.

“Sri Lanka is such a beautiful place with kind people, and then something like this happens, now I’m gonna be on edge for the rest of my trip,” she said.
