1,270 drunk drivers arrested- 34,980 fined

Some 1,270 drunk drivers were arrested while 34,980 motorists were charged with traffic-related violations during a countrywide special operation carried out from April 11 to today, the Police said.

They said 329 drunk drivers were arrested and 5,519 charged for traffic violations within a 24-hour period which ended at 6 a.m. today.

Traffic DIG Ajith Rohana said more than 8,000 police officers were deployed for traffic duties and strict action would be taken against motorists found drunk at the wheel and those found speeding. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
