What’s the govt.’s solution to recurring landslides?

Landslides have now become an everyday occurrence for people living in hilly areas. The tragic landfall in Kadugannawa, claiming lives of six people,  speaks volumes about negligence of authorities to provide a solution. Unplanned development is one of the major reasons for such disasters, particularly because illegal establishments could be seen on either side all the way up to Kandy. It could be that these shop owners have their legal documents,  but approval issued to setup in such locations is extremely questionable.

Sri Lankan culture is such that if one shop comes up somewhere, another person would also want to have a shop right next to it,  and it goes on until serene environments become polluted. This could be seen in many pristine locations in the country from Meemure to Bomburu Ella, Ella, Sri Pada and so on. Therefore,  it is solely on the hands of the authorities to limit or regulate such establishments being setup in environmentally sensitive locations. Landslides have become like bus accidents in these areas, there’s no end to such disasters and policymakers keep having discussions and compiling reports. No amount of compensation is enough to replace a life lost. Prevention is the only alternative,  and there is enough expertise around if the government is determined to find a solution.
