The spike in the number of road accidents over the past 24 hours speaks volumes about policy level interventions that need to be taken to protect citizens. The Ramboda bus accident claimed the lives of over 20 innocent people. Shocking footage of a mother trying to save her child speak volumes about lapses in local rescue missions at times of crisis. Sri Lanka has taken snail-paced efforts to ensure road safety. There have been many bus
accidents in the outskirts such as the Passara accident. Even though there are experts in the field no action has been taken to streamline these services. People place their ultimate trust in public transport; but when drivers show careless attitudes, who will be held accountable for these shortcomings? No amount of compensation can replace the value of a life. This has been a recurring issue for many years and there was ample time for lawmakers to take action. But unfortunately nothing has come out of past incidents. Perhaps this government needs to expedite action and ensure that these innocent lives are being saved.
