The spike in the number of road accidents over the past 24 hours speaks volumes about policy level interventions that need to be taken to protect citizens. The Ramboda bus accident claimed the lives of over 20 innocent people. Shocking footage of a mother trying to save her child speak volumes about lapses in local rescue missions at times of crisis. Sri Lanka has taken snail-paced efforts to ensure road safety. There have been many bus accidents in the outskirts such as the Passara accident. Even though there are experts in the field no action has been taken to streamline these services. People place their ultimate trust in public transport; but when drivers show careless attitudes, who will be held accountable for these shortcomings? No amount of compensation can replace the value of a life. This has been a recurring issue for many years and there was ample time for lawmakers to take action. But unfortunately nothing has come out of past incidents. Perhaps this government needs to expedite action and ensure that these innocent lives are being saved.

our buses are far too large for our roads also the rear end of the of the imported chassis is locally extended by 4 feet to accommodate more passenger seats affecting vehicle control. Seeing the smashed matchbox condition of the accident (bus/busses/even other imported vehicles) the poor construction of the shell speaks for itself. There is no authority to check on this and the RMV when cleared of its corruption philosophy will be the ideal authority to issue a certificate for imported vehicles in co-ordination with insurance authorities and released for use after registration. There is enough of evidence of reconditioned crashed vehicles being imported misleading buyers with the shiny new paint. This is common in our country

Sadly, the only solution is something that Sri Lankan's lack in their DNA, Discipline and Self-control. We never had it and can never have it.

The busses go in high speeds and sudden breaks applied, even within the Colombo city. Vehicle Management System can be used to monitor drivers' behavior including speed, sudden breaks, overtaking etc. and vehicle maintenance. This will make every bus' position available online and passengers can see it. Through it, regulators can monitor and question drivers if they race to overtake other busses. It is little costly but the government should invest in this and save lives. In long term, this investment will give dividends in the form of less accidents.
