Tourism in a perverse country

Another young man was arrested on Thursday (26) for harassing a female tourist. Even though major tourism campaigns have been launched to generate revenue to the country, there’s much more to be done in terms of hospitality. One cannot quite imagine being harassed in an unknown country when all that you wanted to do was to go on a vacation. Attractive posters and campaigns to invite tourists alone won’t suffice. This is not the first time that a tourist was harassed by a local. Last year, another pervert revealed his private parts to a female tourist who was traveling by herself. Since  the entire episode was filmed, it was easier to apprehend the perpetrator. But arresting these perpetrators alone won’t solve the issue. The psychological damage done to tourists is irreversible. It could be so traumatising that they wouldn’t want to recommend Sri Lanka for travel. Even though these perverse acts boil down to individual discipline, what the state perhaps could do is impose stricter fines on perpetrators. Anybody has the right to move about freely on this island,  and it need not be discouraged by a few individuals who think it is their right to harass tourists. It is up to the authorities to ensure that tourists or any individual for that matter is safe. Otherwise,  it would be difficult to  call this country a paradise.
