In honour of the newly appointed Warden, Asanka Perera, and Sub-Warden, Dr. Radeeka Mendis, of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, the Old Boys’ Association of the school (STCML OBA) organised a welcoming ceremony on January 23 at Mount Lavinia Hotel. This marked the beginning of a new era of leadership for the institution, which upholds a legacy spanning 175 years.

The event was graced by members of the alumni association and other Old Boys of the school. Though it was a small, formal gathering - it carried great significance, reflecting a strong sense of unity, pride, and enduring commitment of the Thomian fraternity toward the future of their alma mater.

During his address, the Secretary of the OBA, Imran Hassan explained that the College entered a new chapter amid a period of uncertainty, and that the need for steadfast leadership arose. He underscored the longstanding contributions of Asanka Perera during much of the challenging times, including the pandemic. Hassan further noted, “Now we stand at a crucial turning point, where education is changing rapidly. AI is altering how work gets done, how knowledge is found, and how skills get measured. This will test every school - It will test what we accept, what we reject, and what we rebuild. This challenge is not only technical, but also moral. It is about honesty and discipline, and about the kind of men we send into the world. That is why this appointment matters so much - Asanka brings the rare mix the moment demands. He respects tradition, faith, and the life of the school. He also understands technology and the pace of change. He can protect what must stay true, while ensuring that the school remains relevant and strong.”

As the school marks its 175th anniversary, the appointment of the new Warden and Sub-Warden was presented as a timely and significant step toward guiding S.Thomas’ College through a rapidly changing educational landscape.

From a video presentation on Warden Perera’s journey at the school, it was revealed that he holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and chose to relinquish a promising overseas career to serve his alma mater through education. He was later appointed Sub-Warden and subsequently, assumed duties as Acting Warden. During this period, he provided the leadership that secured the largest single donation ever received by the school. In his address, Perera said, “I am ready to serve the school and uphold its proud legacy, however, it is important that we all work collectively to guide the institution to greater heights.”

Appointed to the academic staff in 2005, Dr. Radeeka Mendis went on to make history as the first female Sub-Warden of S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia. She holds a PhD in Christian Education, making her one of the most highly qualified educators at the institution. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, “Joining S. Thomas’ College as a Divinity teacher, and later being appointed Headmistress of the Arts and Commerce Section, I never imagined that I would one day hold such an esteemed position and make history. Nevertheless, I am truly grateful and honoured.”

The event concluded with dinner and fellowship, providing an opportunity for Old Boys and guests to mingle, share memories and celebrate the new heads of the school. Overall, the appointments of Warden Perera and Sub-Warden Dr. Mendis mark a significant milestone for the school by the sea, as the alumni association looks ahead to its 175th year with renewed confidence and a shared sense of commitment.
