Police lacks training in law enforcement

The Police must enforce road discipline to counter accidents. The best is a very strenuous training in prevention, detection and proper prosecution. These are the three main ingredients the Police should concentrate on if the Police is to achieve desired success.

The Police Department should have a long-term plan and a short-term plan in handling and creating road discipline. The long-term plan should commence with the schools.

The Police should create competitions among schools and recognise them with awards etc. The short-term action should be for the traffic headquarters to find sponsors and ensure there are competitions for good driving throughout the country and also getting offenders to attend refresher courses in driving during weekends and public holidays rather than imposing fines which should be the last resort.

The Police should, with the local authorities, ensure that there are traffic lights along with CCTV cameras with the cameras being monitored at District Headquarters and imposing fines or taking such offenders to courts.

Perhaps there is no proper planning by the Police in training their personnel in taking offenders to task as they appear not to know about various offences committed in the form of taking to task those driving or riding vehicles in a negligent manner.

Let us hope that the Police commence training their own staff to enable good law enforcement.
