Need to cultivate positive attitudes

The Independence Day editorial of the ‘Daily Mirror’ had correctly and clearly illustrated facts that hindered Sri Lanka’s economic, social and political progress, despite attaining so-called freedom some 78 years ago.

As pointed out by the article, the country was deprived of much needed social cohesion, unity and determination.

The crucial missing factor had been our inability to cultivate in appreciable measure the desired positive attitudes such as commitment to duties, feelings of empathy towards fellow citizens,  and, in some instances,  to  members in the own family and true patriotism.

The attitudinal changes are a must component for peace, harmony and prosperity in any society. Most  world communities, it appears,  are lacking of these humane qualities.

It is high time that each one of us made a commitment to bring about unity in diversity to embark upon the path of progress.
