Corruption is not the way forward

The NPP finally won the second reading of the Colombo Municipal Council budget. During its first reading,  the ruling party lost,  and this loss was followed by a rather emotional speech by the mayoress. She requested those who voted against the budget to knock their conscience and check whether they could have a peaceful sleep. Having been a UNP stronghold, this is one of the rare instances when the CMC is run by the NPP. But in the past, the CMC has done some tangible work under previous mayors, looking after impoverished communities in its surrounds. The new mayoress too,  did many campaigns, getting women to play an active role in local council level politics. Now that they have won the budget, indeed there’s much to do for the people. The CMC should immediately look at resolving the parking fee mafia as it remains unsolved to date. Even though successive mayors attempted to resolve it, they have not been successful. Proper waste management is another aspect that needs to be streamlined before another garbage dump collapses onto people. In fact the CMC has more work on its shoulders now, especially in terms of winning back the trust of people. So,  without going down the path of corruption, let’s hope the new team of councillors would serve the people.
