Suspect arrested over alleged assault on lawyers outside Nugegoda Court

Mirihana Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the criminal intimidation of a lawyer and an attack on his vehicle following proceedings at the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court.  

According to Police, a complaint was lodged stating that two lawyers who appeared for a case at the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court on 30 January 2026 were leaving the court premises when a group of individuals blocked the road, surrounded their vehicle, threatened to kill them and damaged the car.  

Three police teams, including officers from the Mirihana Police Station, were deployed to investigate the incident.  

A suspect was arrested by a team of  Police officers in the Kajulandawatte area in Madampe. He was taken into custody on charges of unlawful obstruction, criminal intimidation and disorderly conduct while being part of an unlawful assembly.  

The arrested suspect is a 43-year-old resident of Madampe.  

Police said the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday (01 February 2026) for an identification parade. Further investigations are underway, to arrest all other suspects involved in the incident.  

Earlier, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) also condemned the incident.  

According to the BASL, the lawyers were attacked by a group of individuals claiming to be the aggrieved parties in the relevant case.
