King Charles III congratulates Sri Lanka, praises emergency services for cyclone response

Britain’s King Charles III has extended his warm congratulations to the President and people of Sri Lanka as the nation celebrates its 78th Independence Day today (4th February).

In a message addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and shared by the British High Commission in Colombo, the King highlighted the enduring partnership and deep historical ties between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka, while acknowledging the significant contributions of the Sri Lankan community in the UK. He also praised the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as education, trade, and climate resilience.

Notably, the King’s message paid tribute to the dedication and courage of Sri Lankan emergency services and volunteers in responding to recent natural disasters, particularly the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025. Describing the cyclone as a “stark reminder of the profound impact of climate change,” His Majesty expressed his heartfelt sympathy for those who lost loved ones or homes.

“My wife and I hold in our thoughts all those who have lost loved ones and whose lives have been so gravely affected,” the King said, commending the tireless efforts of emergency responders in mitigating the disaster’s impact.

Looking ahead, the King also expressed his anticipation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November 2026, where he hopes to reaffirm shared commitments and “chart a course for the future.”

The message concluded with a call for global “bold steps toward sustainability” and a wish for a peaceful and prosperous year for all Sri Lankans.
