The Department of Meteorology has warned that the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body, is likely to increase to ‘Caution Level’ in several parts of the country today(11), the Meteorology Department said.

According to the forecast, higher heat index values are expected at some places in the Western Province, Sabaragamuwa Province, Southern Province and North Western Province, as well as in the Monaragala District.

The Meteorology Department said the heat index forecast is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature, indicating the level of heat actually felt by the human body. It noted that the heat index does not represent the forecast of the maximum temperature, but rather the combined effect of temperature and humidity.

The forecast is issued for the next-day period using global numerical weather prediction model data, the department said.

Authorities also issued several precautionary measures for the public. People working at job sites have been advised to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Those indoors have been urged to check on elderly and sick individuals, while motorists were reminded never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

People engaging in outdoor activities have been advised to limit strenuous activities, seek shade and drink plenty of water. The public has also been encouraged to wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing to reduce heat exposure.
