Driver who drove bus over Kala Oya bridge during Ditwah granted bail

High Court ordered the release of the driver of the private bus on bail. The driver

had been remanded on the charge of driving the bus with 68 passengers across the Kala Oya bridge when it was under water during the recent disaster and thereby causing the death of two passengers and endangering the life of 66 others.  

High Court Judge Lakmali Hewawasam who upheld the bail application submitted by the suspect driver’s wife through Attorney at Law Asanga Disanayake. The Judge ordered the release of the suspect Dhanushma Kumarasinge of Ihala Puliyankulam on personal bail in Rs.2.5 million with two sureties each.  

 Police had produced the suspect before Nochchiyagama magistrate under Section 296 and 300 on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and he was in remand for two months.   The Attorney General and the OIC Rajangana Police were cited as respondents to the bail application. Attorney at Law Asanga Disanayake, instructed by Attorney at Law Dushanthika Disanayaka supported the bail application.State Counsel Yomali Nagodawithana appeared for the respondents.
