The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha has recovered a total of LKR 197.7 million in compensation during 2025 on behalf of the next of kin (NOKs) of Sri Lankan nationals who passed away in Qatar.
According to the Embassy, a total sum of LKR 197,719,710.36 was secured and remitted for disbursement to the respective families. Of this amount, LKR 23,641,182.00 was directly paid to the NOKs through the Embassy’s intervention, while LKR 174,078,528.36 was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism in Colombo for onward disbursement.
The Embassy said that several of the compensation payments related to cases that had remained pending since 2014.
The recovery process was carried out through close coordination between Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Qatar, Sithara Khan; Minister of the Embassy, Dharmasiri Wijewardane; and Translator, M. R. M. Fiyas, in collaboration with the relevant companies, the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the Government of Qatar, and the legal firm engaged by the Embassy.
In comparison, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha recovered LKR 172.99 million in compensation in 2024, which was successfully disbursed to the NOKs in Sri Lanka.
