Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said the need of the co-operative movement has been felt more than ever in view of the breakdown of trade activities in the aftermath of the Corona virus pandemic.
Addressing a meeting of the Ratnapura District Anti-CORONA Task Force, he pointed out that the entire Sri Lankan society had realised the indispensability of the co-operative movement to manage disastrous situations including floods, landslides and the COVID -19 pandemic to maintain the supply chain.

“Cooperative movement has suffered a set back due to socio-economic and political issues, but no force can distance it from the people. The need of the co-operative movement has been felt more than ever today when the supply of essential goods was disrupted due to the CORONA virus pandemic. Co-operative movement will play a prominent role in the effort of economic development”, he said.

The Governor further said that he decided to strengthen the co-operative movement in the Sabaragamuwa Province and as a result, cooperative shops had already been opened in several areas in the province.
Chief Secretary Ranjani Jayakody, Addl. District Secretary Udaya Kumari, and Provincial Commissioner of Cooperatives Mayura Prasad Aarandara were present at the occasion.
