The spread of several viral diseases is on the rise due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, Gampaha Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr. Ravinda Udagamage warned.

Speaking at a media briefing, Dr. Udagamage said the current cold and dry climate has created an environment conducive to the rapid transmission of viral infections, particularly among young children.

He said that most of the illnesses being reported affect the upper respiratory tract.

“These viral diseases mainly impact the upper part of the respiratory system. They tend to spread easily, especially among preschool-aged children,” Dr. Udagamage cautioned.

He urged the public to remain vigilant about their health, highlighting common symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Dr. Udagamage highlighted that medical attention should be sought immediately if symptoms persist for more than three days or if a patient experiences difficulty in breathing.

The public has been advised to take preventive measures, maintain good hygiene practices and seek timely medical care to avoid complications during this period of increased viral activity.
