At least 25 schools in Kandy district face landslide threat

At least 25 schools in the Kandy district have been found to be vulnerable to landslide risks, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya informed Parliament yesterday.  

A document tabled by the Prime Minister in response to an oral question raised by MP Rauff Hakeem said 25 schools which are found to be vulnerable to landslides are from Denuwara, Gampola, Wattegama, Kandy and Theldeniya educational zones.  

It was also revealed that it has been decided to relocate Paragala Sinhala School Gampola, Al Hikma School Gampola, Baranagala Tamil School Gampola, Bambarabedda School Theldeniya, Kaleyimagal Tamil School Theldeniya, Namagal Tamil School Theldeniya and Al Aksha School Denuwara.  

Furthermore, it has been revealed that some 57 schools in Kandy district have been partly damaged by the cyclone Diwah which hit Sri Lanka in November last year. These are from Mahanuwara, Denuwara, Katugastota, Wattegama, Gampola and Theldeniya education zones.
