Apeksha Hospital commences Bone marrow transplants in SL

Maharagama Apeksha Hospital has made a forward stride by performing in Sri Lanka the Bone Marrow Transplant in children suffering from bone marrow cancer.    Addressing a ceremony to donate an Ultra Sound Scan Machine to the Children’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit by the Hospital Development Committee, Chief Medical Officer of the unit Dr.Prabhani Mallawarachchi said Bone Marrow Transplant surgery performed earlier in India or any other foreign country cost between Rs. 10 million and 30million.   

Dr.Mrs. Mallawarachchi said this costly surgery could now be performed free at the Apeksha Hospital. She said the patients after surgery would be under observation for a couple of years and that all expenses of it would be met by  donations to the Hospital Development Committee.  

She further said at least four children a month undergo the Bone Marrow transplant at present and six children who underwent the surgery are getting on quite well.
