Health Ministry to change procedure on announcing COVID deaths

The Health Ministry has taken steps to change the procedure on announcing COVID-19 related deaths in a single day with effect from today.

Accordingly, Director-General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena told media that a procedure would be in place only to report in a day, the deaths that occur within 48 hours or 24 hours.

“We have been reporting deaths that occur several days ago in a day, which we are going to change from today,” Dr Gunawardena said.

The recent COVID-19 deaths that were reported in a single day had taken place several days and sometimes, weeks ago. Because of this situation, the daily tally of COVID-19 deaths remained at a high number. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

So what happens to the fatalities which occurred before and not announced? And not only today but in days to come. As you said the testing process takes time. Tell you what? Stop testing altogether and annouce to the world that we have controlled it best!

Whatever the methodology adopted, death due to COVID-19 is a death that should be counted towards COVID related deaths. Changing the approach to announce the number of deaths would not help prevent the disease's spread. In what sort of a county are we living in?
