Texture Matters A Weaver’s Journey Unfolds

Texture Matters is an exhibition where Marie Gnanaraj redefines the possibilities of her weaving practice. Her works are layered in unexpected ways, inviting one to reconsider what weaving can be. Some pieces are airy and translucent, echoing the fragility of passing moments, while others are dense and tactile, compelling engagement with surface and the sensations it provokes.

The exhibition blends the depth of a retrospective with the intimacy of a working studio. Finished works appear alongside pieces from previous exhibitions, fragments, samples, and unfinished experiments. Reworked weaves sit beside new explorations, offering insight into the craftsmanship and curiosity which is at the heart of Marie’s creative process.

Drawing inspiration from her built environment and materials, she engages in a process of continual discovery, experimenting with techniques, layering textures, and reimagining the relationship between structure and surface.Texture Matters will be on view from 15 August to 24 August at Barefoot Gallery, Colombo
