‘Muthumuni Ayurveda Resort’: Ayurveda and yoga retreat

Ayurveda, known as ‘the science of life,’ extends beyond a mere medical system. It is a traditional form of medicine that focuses on the overall wellness of both mind and body. The Sinhala version of Ayurveda is known as ‘Hela Wedakama,’ with origins dating back to around 1500 BC. Indigenous Medicine of Sri Lanka (Hela Wedakama) represents an ancient tradition of healthcare and healing practices, forming a unique cultural heritage passed down through generations of the island’s native people.

Tourism and wellness go hand in hand, and Sri Lanka, one of Asia’s leading destinations, is focusing on wellness tourism as a major attraction in its fast-growing tourism sector for the year 2025. According to the Global Wellness Tourism Economy Report (GWTER), an estimated 19 million travellers identify themselves as being focused on health and well-being, with 42% of them traveling regularly.

Sri Lanka, as one of South Asia’s leading providers of Ayurvedic wellness, is now poised to capture a greater share of the global medical tourism market.
