Cinnamon Citadel Modern yet traditional

Sitting gracefully along the banks of the Mahaweli River, Cinnamon Citadel Kandy captures the soul of the hill capital like no other. The resort is more than just a scenic escape, it’s a tribute to the timeless elegance and heritage of Kandy. Once the site of the historic ‘Dunuwila Walawwa’, this charming retreat blends tradition with contemporary luxury, offering guests a taste of Kandyan grandeur framed by nature’s serenity.

Popularly known in earlier years as ‘Citadel’ and later ‘Chaaya Citadel’, the property underwent a remarkable transformation under the creative vision of renowned architect Channa Daswatta almost one and a half decades ago. Today, it stands as a four-star-plus resort that effortlessly marries modern sophistication with cultural authenticity. Every element, from its architecture to its art, pays homage to the Kandyan spirit, while the sweeping views of the Mahaweli River remind visitors that they’re in one of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting settings.

The resort’s design embraces open spaces, natural light, and soft tones of red, gold, and earthy brown, echoing the warmth and grace of Kandy’s royal heritage. The infinity pool overlooking the Mahaweli and the thick forest creates a perfect spot to watch dusk settle over the river, as the hills turn to shadow and the city lights begin to twinkle in the distance.

Most of the rooms at Cinnamon Citadel Kandy open out to captivating views of the Mahaweli River, offering guests a front-row seat to its tranquil charm. The resort features 115 rooms in total, comprising 24 Deluxe Rooms, two elegant Suites, and a collection of Superior Rooms, each thoughtfully designed with thematic interiors that reflect the Kandyan spirit.

All rooms come equipped with modern comforts such as a TV, telephone, mini-bar, tea/coffee making and ironing facilities, well stocked mini bar and other contemporary amenities with en suite bathroom that ensure a relaxed and comfortable stay.

‘This resort is truly showcased in the facilities designed for leisure travellers. Its newly refurbished lobby and public areas reflect a genuine Kandyan touch, seamlessly blended with a modern outlook. This is exactly what architect Channa Daswatta envisioned for the old Citadel’ explained Charith Goonesekera, General Manager of the resort. ‘Our main motto is guest satisfaction, and we are fully committed to that’.

Dining at Cinnamon Citadel is a sensory experience. The latest addition to its range of dining facilities is ‘Chutneys’, the Indian Restaurant. ‘Chutneys’ is an à la carte Indian restaurant by the Mahaweli River, bringing authentic flavours and vibrant energy to the heart of Kandy.

‘Set against stunning riverside views, Chutneys blends colour, culture and cuisine in a space designed for connection. This is the first Chutneys restaurant to open outside Cinnamon Grand Colombo. Guests can savour a thoughtfully curated menu of Indian favourites, enjoy the lively bar, and take in the beauty of the Mahaweli as they dine’ explained Charith Goonesekera, General Manager of the resort.

The main restaurant, Panorama, lives up to its name, offering breathtaking views of the river while guests indulge in a selection of international and local cuisine. The Café C and Lounge Bar provide intimate spaces to unwind, whether it’s a quiet evening with a cocktail by the water’s edge or a lazy afternoon with freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

Beyond its beauty, Cinnamon Citadel embodies the essence of Kandyan hospitality, calm, dignified, and steeped in culture. Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a family retreat or a quiet escape from the bustle of the city, the resort offers a journey into the heart of Kandy’s heritage, wrapped in the luxury of contemporary comfort.

‘We serve a wide range of cuisines, from international favourites to traditional Kandyan, Sri Lankan, Oriental and Continental dishes. Theme nights are also organised based on the preferences of our in-house guests’ said Executive Chef.

‘The Wine Wall will be the latest addition to the resort in the near future — most likely by the end of this year’ he added.

With a well-equipped, Wi-Fi-enabled conference hall, Cinnamon Citadel Kandy is also an ideal venue for business meetings and workshops accommodating up to 100 participants. The resort further serves as a charming destination for weddings, offering the elegance of Kandyan tradition alongside the comfort and warmth of its luxurious rooms.

‘Whether it is to enjoy excursions to historic places and a host of other attractions that Kandy is famed for,  or to just discover Kandy in its contemporary yet traditional demeanour, Cinnamon Citadel believes strongly in creating that milieu’ said GM Charith.
