With the uncontrollable increase in three-wheeler fares, the All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers' Union (AITWDU) has increased the three-wheeler fare with immediate effect.

While addressing the media, AITWDU President Lalith Dharmasekera said the fares for the first and second kilometers in a three-wheeler have been increased to Rs. 120 and Rs. 100 from today.

Three-wheeler drivers who currently operate through mobile apps and those who do not operate through apps or metres are charging Rs. 250 for their first km.

Due to fuel shortages, the three-wheeler fares were revised that the first km was Rs. 100 and the second km was Rs. 90. But the metered three-wheelers used to charge Rs. 120 and Rs. 100 for the first and second km, he said.

Therefore, Dharmasekara requested the people to inquire about the charges before boarding vehicle. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

They can increase rates as they wish, but the demand will reduce based on people's affordability. People who have got used with other low cost transport modes during month of July will continue the same manner and they will lose income. Usage of three wheelers by low and middle income earners will drop. In a way that's good to reduce the three wheeler menace in our society. Also will increase labor force availability for local industries.

Almost all three weelers charging the meter charge plus 500/=,1000/=, beyond the meter charge. No authorities to make a complaint. At the commencement of the hire, the Wheeler drivers show politeness and at the end of the journey, behave rudely demanding double, treble fair, passengers become slaves, compelled to pay as demanded Wheeler drivers have a sharp weapon with them, when resisted to attack.

People have become so bloody lazy they even don't walk few hundred meters got no energy even the young ones if they walk 1 km i don't think wil be able get out of bed .....so threewheel have opportunity to make any decision to make money likes of other culprits. Government should strictly regulate the threewheel industry. These guys are a law unto themselves. They should not be allowed to operate as individuals and hence, only by registering with a registered taxi and transport operator. (at least in the western and southern provinces) This is for the betterment of all stakeholders in the industry. The state should set the minimum standards and closely monitor and strictly regulate the companies. This is vital for the development of the industry and to protect and safeguard the immage and reputation of the country as a whole.

Isn't there a regulator for these Three Wheelers? They increase charges amidst reduction in fuel prices. Even ever demanding bus operators opted for a fare reduction. High time govt. regulated these monsters.

    N Andasena Thursday, 18 August 2022 04:46 PM

This is rubbish. The rates in kandy and surrounding suburbs are Rs300 for the first and as they wish for the second.

Good move to be rid of this menace. Nobody cares since nobody can afford to go in 3wheelers anymore. Please add more CTB buses to the fleet of vehicles. People take the bus or walk wherever possible now.

At current fuel prices a three wheeler should do minimum 15 per litre and Rs 450 divided by15 will be 30.00 add the other costs including driver wages it would be around another 50.00. but they charge over 150.00 for 1 km in Ragama.

This union is concerned only about increasing the fares. Many three wheelers run without price meters and people fall into their traps. First try to give a solution for these kind of activities done by your own three wheel guys. Also, by increasing the price you'll will see soon that three wheel community is going to suffer big time.
