A mechanism should be introduced to regulate or ban social media claiming that they have been the major cause for child abuses, Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said.

The Minister told Parliament that Sri Lanka had no proper laws to regulate social media which should be responsible for child abuses.

"Facebook, websites and other social media should be 90 percent responsible for the cases of child abuses. There are no laws in the country to regulate or ban social media. I have repeatedly brought this matter in the Cabinet," he said.

Speaking during the adjournment debate yesterday, he said no social media was operating in China.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

So we are already a part of China?

    Lion Thursday, 05 August 2021 03:25 PM

This is good. They must not allow the people to tarnish the image of the country on the social media platforms.

    Sambo Friday, 06 August 2021 10:01 AM

The image of the country is already tarnished by our so called politicians and there is nothing remained to be tarnished.

As per Sri Lanka constitution we have to right of expression. In the past we had black spells when the main steam print and radio was state controlled. That age is gone. You are not worried about child abuse, you are only worried of the criticism of the government in the state media.

Nadi Karunaratne Thursday, 05 August 2021 03:28 PM

Of course you want to control the flow of information and avoid criticism. You have so much to hide and so much to be ashamed of. We don't want a dictatorship.

China has its own social media but not the western based social media. Obviously, the minister is not wise enough to understand in detail.

    Priyan77 Thursday, 05 August 2021 05:39 PM

Social Media is the most powerful media against corrupted politicians. So they try to control. TRY IF YOU CAN ?
