National Peoples' Power MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who raised concerns over the arrest of protesters by the policemen in civvies, today urged the Government to adopt a proper procedure when making the arrests.
He told Parliament that Policemen in civvies had arrested the protestors who were heading home after the protests and said it was totally unacceptable.
"These policemen in civvies got onto the buses and arrested the protesters. Several university students have been abducted by the policemen in mufti, who came in white vans. The Government does not act like a regime, but like jungle rulers. This should be stopped. If arrests are made, it should be done in the proper way," he said.
MP Dissanayake also pointed out that the protesting teachers who were heading home after the protests were arrested by various police stations and questioned as to why they all were taken to the Harbour Police station.
Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara said he would not influence the police and said he would respond to the question, if the MP had raised it officially. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
