Sri Lanka has been slapped with 44 percent reciprocal tariff by the US, which would impact the local export sector, particularly apparel.
According to President Donald Trump's new tariff, the island nation has been imposed a 10 percent baseline tax and a 44 percent reciprocal tax, making it 54 percent effective.
Sri Lanka is among the list of countries that have been slapped with high tariffs by President Trump.
Tariffs charged to the US by Sri Lanka, including currency manipulation and trade barriers, is 88%.
As reported by Mirror Business in print today, Sri Lanka is yet to assess the impact of the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

He is correct, our market is flooded with substandard products from China. We need quality products from USA, Europe. Even getting a quality driller is a challenge in SL. Now the stupid Srilankan government can think about importing stuff from USA

You need to change the mindset "He is correct". In an open market you get different qualities based on what you can afford. If you can't find it, it's your inability. World is changing, you don't buy a driller machine for generations to use these days.

Most products in USA are made in China. To assess this , visit China and them your preferred West. You will realise that you go from future to the past. Travel in a train in China and then do travel in one in your preferred countries. You will know the difference, it is not comparable as China is very advanced.

Products manufactured in the USA, Europe are expensive. Even China produces goods required to meet Western standards; the problem is that Srilankans cannot afford to pay that kind of money except for a few. Importers in SL bring in cheap products that the general public can afford to pay no surprise thes are low quality

M Fernando Thursday, 03 April 2025 02:44 PM
VT, can you name some things that are actually manufactured in the USA that we in Sri Lanka need and can afford? Maybe you can also explain why Apple (for example), offshored manufacturing to Taiwan, China, Malaysia etc when they could have manufactured in the US.

Now you have your Vijitha Herath FM who is supposed be a way better than Kadiragamar, Mangala and Ali Sabri together - the way you talk. You get really tested under storms like this. You were plain sailing while blaming everything on the past governments without an iota of gratitude to them for their good work (obviously they had their bad deeds too but that’s a different matter). You guys thought governing is a walk on the park. You thought even India was insignificant to us, probably that’s why you unceremoniously sent Adani packing home on some flimsy grounds of few Rupee difference of tariff with which we would have got a transmission system too in addition to wind generation (that no other company had offered). Now show us you can match your high talk with some action!

Fair Play Thursday, 03 April 2025 01:07 PM
So to you it is few Rupees difference of tariff. But that is double that we can get solar power. Also this 50% is to be paid every year for 20 years. It is not a few rupees but a hefty lot of $s as you pay Adani in $s. Good economic sense will see that.

This is going to be an absolute disaster for our exports of apparel etc. Expect mass layoffs and shut down of factories. I did not know we had a import tax rate of 88% one of the highest on US goods. How stupid are we? I wonder if we do the same to the EU as well while expecting discounts from them. ding dong is an idiot. Our government is pretty much the same. Good luck to the morons who voted for this lot of Buffoons.

Every country should charge a tariff in reciprocity. Had every other country followed the USA in whacking this tariff on trade, successive SL governments could not have profited by hijacking the local consumers hostage through extortion. Same with these illegal VAT’s that would have fallen flat on its face!

Dr Harasha Thursday, 03 April 2025 01:30 PM
We should put reciprocal tariffs against Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia and other country we do little business with. Instead of the weak US approach of only putting 50% of the opposing sides tariffs, we should do 75% or 80%, at least, if not 100% reciprocal tariffs.

Your wise comment needs some research to understand how even close (former) allies of the US are treating this economic betrayal and are forging new alliances that rely less on the US. Principally Canada, and Mexico but also the EU, UK, Ireland etc. It is only a matter of time before the US becomes a second-grade market. It was US companies (Apple for example) that originally decides to offshore manufacturing to Japan, China, Taiwan etc (because labour was cheaper). A US made Apple phone will cost 3 times as much as it does today. Now that short-sighted policy of the 60's and 70's has come back to haunt them. Even American's underpants are made in some other country. How easy will it be to make a "jungi/lunket" in California and how much will it cost ? Will be fun to watch.

Your lack of intelligence is showing here. Trump's tarrifs has nothing to do with our dealings with BRlCS or who's in charge of our government. It's purely based on how much countries are taxing the US imports, allies and enemies alike. But your coloured glasses and small mind can only see fault in the NPP government.

Sri Lanka imports a very little from the US compared to our exports to them (apparels). Why not reduce the tariffs we charge them to something like 10% of the present value? Trump’s madness has a method in it. That’s why a low tariff country like Singapore gets a very favourable treatment. In a way this may be a blessing in disguise where we talk about building barriers (sorry Harsha to borrow the term from you) instead of fast moving towards proper free trade. In capable hands this crisis can be turned into a very favourable one that way.

Prasanna Thursday, 03 April 2025 12:27 PM
Sri Lanka should lower the tariff to 44% so that the US will decrease to 22%. We need to focus on our export market, as we do more exports than imports to US

The FAST FOOD INDUSTRY is ONE of the Most LUCRATIVE Industries of the US. To COMPETE with the PRESENCE of these FRANCHISES (McDonald’s, Starbucks, Burger King, Hardee’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Pepsi, Coke etc) Sri Lanka Should Come Up with its Own LOCAL Products

There is a simple solution, stop currency manipulation against US dollar and reduce import duties good sent from USA. However, now that USA identifies countries based on the amount of tariff they put on, not long from now all other nations will seek to do the same against us. Immediate issue is loss of revenue from tariff reduction on USA goods, which must be balanced against taxation gains on garment industry. Also concessions given to garment industry including any electricity subsidy is included by USA in calculating the in the 88% tariff. Therefore long term giving concessions to business is going to get Lanka into more trouble and must be avoided.

Cheating other country has led to this problem Thursday, 03 April 2025 01:57 PM
US said "the combined rate of all their tariffs, non-monetary barriers and other forms of cheating" is how they calculate reciprocal tariffs against Lanka. Major cultural overhaul is necessary to significantly reduce what US sees as cheating by Lanka.

Sri Lanka deserves this and asked for it. I ordered a computerised train controller for my model railway. I was charged a 45% tax which was calculated included freight chargers. It is time Sri Lanka learn a lesson from this. Thanks President Trump. By the way I am no supported of Trump and voted for the NPP at the last to elections.

Keep it simple - drop our import tariffs from the United States to 10% like what Singapore does, or take them off completely. Go to Washington with an able and proficient (not these so called experts) group, and speak with President Trump’s administration directly. Enter into a free trade agreement, with immediate effect and allow American companies with FDIs to enter our market, removing all regulations and expediting the approvals process. Deal with the US, Japan, India and Singapore, instead of flirting and getting into bed with China and the rest of the “no good buggers” who are not only after the bone, but the marrow in it too. No time for heroics, dramatics and theatrics. Keep all the chest pounding and big talk out of this. We don’t want heroes, we want solution based pragmatic people, who know their salt and can steer this sinking ship out of these troubled waters. Rant over.
