Anuradhapura, June 18 – The government will recruit nearly 30,000 new teachers this year in what Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya described as the largest teacher recruitment drive in the country's history.
Speaking at a meeting with North Central Provincial education authorities in Anuradhapura, the Prime Minister said the recruitment programme will include 23,000 graduate teachers, 6,100 teachers trained through National Colleges of Education, and education graduates.
She said the government also plans to gradually recruit educational administrators and teacher consultants in the future to strengthen the education sector.
The Prime Minister said that addressing teacher shortages alone would not be sufficient and stressed the importance of resolving issues related to teacher distribution, educational administration and data management.
She reiterated that the government is making a major investment in education and that every effort should be directed towards providing quality education for children.
