A woman arrested over the death of a street dog allegedly run over intentionally in Pannipitiya has been remanded until December 9 by the Homagama Magistrate’s Court.
Homagama Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya issued the order on Tuesday (25) after the suspect, a resident of Delgahawatta in Kottawa–Pannipitiya, was produced before court.
According to police reports submitted to court, the street dog — which lived near Alubogahawatta Road, close to the Pannipitiya Vidyalaya junction — died on November 14 after being struck by a car driven by the suspect. Residents and animal welfare groups lodged a complaint with the Kottawa Police on November 16, alleging that the killing was deliberate.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had previously informed area residents of her intention to kill the dog, the police told the court.
CCTV footage from a nearby residence had captured the incident, and after reviewing the footage, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded till December 9.
