UNP’s Colombo Municipal Councillor Sandamali Uluwitage has been hospitalized following an alleged assault by a group of National People’s Power (NPP) supporters on Monday night. Speaking to the media, Uluwitage said the incident occurred when a group of NPP supporters, who had attended a Colombo Municipal Council meeting, visited her place of business and allegedly attacked her.
“The NPP supporters were under the influence of liquor. They were drunk in front of my office, came into my shop, set off firecrackers, and verbally abused me using profanities,” Uluwitage said.
“One of the female candidates who was with me recorded the whole scene. The supporters then tried to grab the phone from her and assaulted me at the entrance of my office,” she claimed. “They dragged me by my hair and hit me. I also saw a bottle being broken, but I cannot clearly recall what happened at that moment. Later, my husband came to help me, but he too was assaulted by the supporters and got caught up in the attack,” she added.
