U.S. Embassy confirms President renounced citizenship in April, 2019

• The President’s name appeared in the Federal register that lists out those who renounced the citizenship

The U.S. Embassy confirmed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa renounced his U.S. citizenship in April 2019.    

In response to a query by Daily Mirror, an embassy spokesman said yesterday President Rajapaksa was no longer a U.S. citizen. “I can confirm that Gotabaya Rajapaksa renounced his U.S. citizenship in April 2019. He is no longer a U.S. citizen,” the spokesman said.  The President’s name appeared in the Federal register that lists out those who renounced the citizenship.   

Normally it takes time for a name of an individual to appear upon renunciation of his citizenship.
