Opposition politician charges: Intelligence services crippled, politicised under NPP Govt.

  • Says officer ranked 13th in seniority appointed head of the Directorate of Military Intelligence

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader Udaya Gammanpila said the intelligence services had been politicised, and an officer who was 13 in terms of seniority had been appointed head of the Directorate of Military Intelligence after transferring all the other seniors.
Asserting that the intelligence sector is the ears and eyes of a country, he said the Yahapalana government that came to power in 2015 acted with callous disregard to the importance of the intelligence services, and the end result was the serial bombings on Easter Sunday 2019.

He said the Sri Lankan authorities were in the dark until the Indian intelligence authorities alerted them.
“Today, on the one hand, the intelligence services are weakened. On the other hand, the intelligence arm is politicised,” he said.
He said the husband of an activist of the Ceylon Teachers’ Services Union, who was 13 in terms of seniority in the military intelligence wing, had been appointed as its head.
“It means 13 seniors have been transferred to make way for him to become the head,” he said.
