Lush Urban greenery

The Bellanwila-Attidiya Wetland area stands out in lush greenery as World Wetlands Day is marked. It is a marshy area with rich biodiversity in Sri Lanka, with 372 hectares in extent, and protected as a sanctuary under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Even though industrial wastes are released to the waterways that flow through the marsh, this, once a very rich wetland, still hosts many interesting species of birds.
