In what appeared to be a controversial statement, former President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday that he is aware of who is behind the Easter Sunday terrorist bombings and ready to divulge all details in case a court order is given.
Making his remarks to the press after a meeting in Kandy, he said it is the responsibility of judges to keep any such revelation by him confidential.
“Rather than disappointed, I live with mental pain today. After becoming the presidential candidate of the common opposition in 2015, I intended to lead this country to a better position. Still, I was not allowed to accomplish what I intended for. I lost some powers because of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. I relinquished such powers willingly.
I never imagined that those who got such powers would abuse them. Both the government and the opposition slandered me. On the other hand, no one has revealed who is behind the Easter Sunday attacks. But I know it,” he said.
