The Government has agreed to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to probe the clearance of 323 red labelled containers from the port.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman told media that a positive response has been received for the request made by the Opposition last week.

“We asked for the appointment of a PSC as per the mandate given by the people to eradicate corruption which is rampant in the country. Therefore, we in the Opposition have decided to work in accordance with this mandate. Therefore, we will provide active support to the select committee members on the probe,” the MP said.

Also the MP recalled that the Opposition had to table the report of the committee which was appointed to probe the container clearance drama as the government refrained from doing so.

The Opposition called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to probe the clearance of 323 red labelled containers last week.

In its official request, the Opposition said the PSC should be provided with a mandate to submit reports from time to time before submitting the final report to Parliament. It also requested that the committee should be given the power to seek the assistance of relevant experts for the probe if needed.
