B.G. Chaturanga - Anuradhapura
A recent boundary survey of the Perimiyankulama Wewa Reserve in Anuradhapura has revealed that five government official residences, several temples and multiple hotels have been built inside the protected area.
The survey, conducted under the supervision of District Secretary Sudarshana Dissanayake, marked 82 contour lines from the reservoir’s water level to identify its true boundaries. The findings confirmed that several unauthorized establishments were located within the reserve.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the spillway of the nearby Lolugas Wewa has been cut to drain water, making way for large-scale hotels and religious constructions. In response, a group of environmentalists have pledged nearly Rs. 2 million to restore the tank and spillway.
The District Secretary said such restoration work could proceed with the approval of the Department of Agrarian Services.
