The Legal Officers’ Association of the Attorney General’s Department has expressed grave concern over the circulation of unfounded and baseless personal attacks directed at Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe (Jnr), PC, and officers of the Attorney General’s Department in the discharge of their official duties.
In a resolution passed at a Special General Meeting held on January 29, 2026, the Association took strong exception to what it described as vituperative, repeated and unfounded personal attacks on the Attorney General. The Association observed that such attacks appear to be part of coordinated attempts to exert pressure on the Attorney General and the officers of the Department, thereby striking at the very root of the independence of the Attorney General’s Department and its officers.
The Association recalled similar attacks carried out in the recent past and noted the timing, content and pattern of these incidents. It further observed that social media platforms have been abused and manipulated to create a veneer of public dissatisfaction, compelling the Association to be wary of what it termed systematic and insidious efforts to intimidate the Attorney General’s Department.
Highlighting the serious consequences of such conduct, the Legal Officers’ Association urged all stakeholders to take every possible step to counter misinformation and prevent the mischief sought to be effected. The Association warned that repeated attacks of this nature cause serious demoralisation, disaffection and dissatisfaction among officers of the Attorney General’s Department, which in turn could impair their ability to provide optimal services to the State and the people of Sri Lanka.
The Association also emphasised that the Attorney General is subject to the rule of law and that any person aggrieved by an act or omission of the Attorney General has recourse to legitimate avenues of redress. It noted that such lawful remedies have been availed of in the past and remain open to those with genuine grievances.
In conclusion, the Legal Officers’ Association urged all responsible citizens to refrain from circulating social media posts containing unsubstantiated allegations and unverified information.
