Cartoon of the Day 23-08-2025: The Kite of Growth, the String of Suffering

The Kite of Growth, the String of Suffering

At first glance, the cartoon shows something seemingly joyful—a kite soaring high in the sky, labeled Economy. But look closer at the string: it isn’t just tethered to the hand of the smiling leader—it is tied directly around the frail, bony body of a starving man, dragging him down as the kite climbs.

The symbolism cuts deep. The economy may indeed appear to be flying, measured in growth rates, stock indices, or international praise. But what fuels that flight? According to this image, it is the sweat, hunger, and suffering of the ordinary citizen. The string that lifts the kite is also the rope that binds the poor.

This cartoon confronts a paradox often hidden in economic narratives: an economy can rise while its people fall. Leaders boast of progress, yet those gains are often detached from the lived realities of the majority. For the working poor, growth isn’t liberation—it’s a tightening leash, demanding sacrifice without sharing the rewards.

There is also a striking commentary on control. The politician smiles, enjoying the sight of the “economy” flying high. But the citizen, who should benefit most, is bent double, crushed under the very weight of holding it aloft. The promise of collective prosperity becomes instead a spectacle managed by the few, endured by the many.

The question the cartoon leaves us with is sobering: if the economy is soaring, why are the people still starving? Until that contradiction is addressed, the kite may dazzle in the sky, but it will always be tethered to injustice on the ground.
