How fun it is for the pupils visiting this reservoir, this is what growing up in Sri Lanka sums up . My son is a secondary school student in Britain. Here when the schools take students on trips like this the the fun is completely removed and the trip becomes an extension of the class work. For example if this type of visiting a reservoir is taking place in Britain , the pupils would have been carrying school note books and a questionnaire, accompanied by Geography teachers and they have to observe the reservoir and answer the questions and that work would be collected by the Teachers before they leave the area. So once I questioned the school and told them that in trips like these the students needs to be away from books and they should be left alone to enjoy and observe things on their own. The the shocking reply from the British school Headmaster was "Any Activity Connected to School is About Learning".

Very nice..but i visited Victoria and Kothmale dams in 1985 when i was a grade 5 student. Dams and reservoirs are old technology and while an outing is nice for the students i hope i hope they are also exposed to more modern technologies . Saying that our curriculums and general outlook hasn't kept up with modern times..there are no science, natural history, astrophysics etc discovery centers which can open up young minds to what is current today and what challenges lie ahead.

@ Sri Lankan Parent in Britain. In contrast to Sri Lanka, there is proper education in schools in the UK. The headmaster is absolutely right. It seems you Sri Lankan parents in Britain have still not shed the local lazy way of life. Having fun is what week-long school trips are for. In Sri Lanka, however, I've never heard of that either, and it's high time the whole school system here was overhauled.
