President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited Kelaniya University to declare open the new building on the premises of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies at the university this morning. The students of Kelaniya University staged a protest blocking the Colombo-Kandy Road against the president’s visit to the university. Pix by Nimalsiri Edirisinghe

Stop their free education!
Well wisher Thursday, 01 February 2024 03:13 AM
Totally agree....the price of freebies! If only they or their parents have to repay their education loans, then they will know the value of it. Long way to go in Srilanka!!
Shan Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:23 AM
Why?. Was free education introduced by Ranil? lol. People get free education from people's money. Students have the right to express their opinion and protest against corruption.
UK UNDERGRADUATE Wednesday, 31 January 2024 07:32 PM
FREE EDUCATION. STUDENTS SHOULD PAY A MINIMUM OF 25% of THE FEES. THE POLITICAL PARTIES MUST TAKE THIS BOLD STEP. LOANS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO BE PAID LATER. NOTHING FREE IN THIS WORLD. EVEN THE OXYGEN WE BREATHE WE PAY. NOT N SRI LANKA

He is not respecting people, vice versa. They know all his suppressions are without any mandate
DillonDP Wednesday, 31 January 2024 07:53 PM
But what rights do they been given to do so.. if they don't want him to visit they should probably not attend the university that he is visiting.. but to block roads .

People with little bit of intelligence do not treat the incumbent as their president. Every one knows that, this man was refused by people and due to our ill luck he jumped in to this position according to our constitution which was prepared by the politicians to serve their interest. It’s not a surprise why university students are protesting his arrival.
Joshua Wednesday, 31 January 2024 08:09 PM
Well done.
Gayan Samarasekara Wednesday, 31 January 2024 08:16 PM
I am a former student from the University of Peradeniya. We duly support president's arrival and appreciate his address at the University of Kelaniya. The kids have plenty to learn from the great Sri Lankan leader who is respected around the world. Recently he delivered a speech here in the US, for which over 2500 (most of them PhDs) participated through zoom alone. Everyone appreciated his views on such a broad spectrum from global politics to environmental issues. My advice to youth is to listen to this great leader, and follow his advice.
Sriyal Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:16 AM
I agree. Listen and learn from all if they have anything to offer. A big issue is that the undergraduates today think they know it all and only they have the solutions. Undergraduate thinking has changed so much from our days when we wanted to seek knowledge, ideas and thoughts from multiple sources. May be the ready availability of internet knowledge repositories are not helping the process. So sad that minds are closed so early these days.

My message, whatever your outlook, please don’t get carried away by Political Satirists, claiming to be Strategists, Lampooning to have answers to all “ILLS” of Sri Lanka, Lankans!!!???

Our small minded people will not understand it ,if JVP can brainwash these young students who are more interligent thanolder gen ,is in it easy to manipulate the minds of older jen bag the votes ?this what happning for long .Just imagine the future of srilanka with these people with low mentality .Ranil may not be a perfect leader but he has proved he can do it unlike other jokers who only talk
Jamal Kudu Wednesday, 31 January 2024 08:37 PM
It is sad to see that JVP keeps on misleading the students. JVP and the communists are good only for disrupting and destroying the country.
Amaran Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:15 AM
@ Gayan . I quite agree with your comment. But the issue here is that HE IS JOINING HANDS WITH ROBBERS WHO DISTROYED OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. Do you know the actual amount of money in USD payable to external creditors? Do we have that amounts ASSETS created with that money? How POLITICIANS have bought properties in the UK?
Ruwan Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:29 AM
There aren't more than 200 children here. Let them play with our tax money.
Ram Thursday, 01 February 2024 03:29 AM
President suppress all of us young and old. These students are doing a service to all of us by the pressures they put in to the President who cannot be deaf
Bandu Thursday, 01 February 2024 03:33 AM
Wasting poor tax payers money. Its time university education be paid. It will improve the quality of education and free up money for the needy.
Tilak Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:20 AM
These protesters were no where to be seen when the President arrived although they threatened not to allow him in.. they held the protest only after he came and left!! Cowards!!!
Ranil’s with a Gang People Despises Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:25 AM
@ Gayan- the issue is he was parachuted into power by the gang of morons which the people despises. Up to date, none of the previous corruption
Ranil the protector of criminals Thursday, 01 February 2024 05:07 AM
The Battalanda torturer of youth should be banned from entry into any educational institution.
NiranjanA Thursday, 01 February 2024 06:01 AM
Our tax money should be to develop the country and not for free education. Never these students will realize the value of free education they are receiving. Impose payment for their education. Our burdens towards tax will reduce.
Nimal Senanayaka Thursday, 01 February 2024 08:38 AM
Super
Sokrates Thursday, 01 February 2024 08:51 AM
@ Gayan Samarasekara. With a university degree, I would have expected you to be more intelligent. Ranil is certainly not a great statesman, he is not recognized on the political stage in any country and when he gives a speech like at the G77 summit the hall is empty because no one is interested in listening to him. His interview on British television some time ago was particularly “great”. He completely lost his composure and his hands were shaking (Parkinson's?). Ranil is a dinosaur who turned dictator and was not elected by the people. His decisions, decrees, speeches and behavior indicate the onset of dementia.
sunil Thursday, 01 February 2024 09:59 AM
curse of free education
sarath Thursday, 01 February 2024 09:59 AM
if they were paying the fees they would be in class trying to complete their studies and try to get a job. Now on the streets for anything
gamini Thursday, 01 February 2024 10:02 AM
our tax money used to fund these peoples education gone waste. We did not pay tax for these guys to be on the streets. They should be in their classrooms
Tissa Fernando Thursday, 01 February 2024 10:32 AM
JVP idiots. Wasting tax payers money by wasting their time. It has always been like this. If they come to power then all these protestors will have no place to go.
Nimal Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:56 AM
All protests against this dictatorial pin president are justified. People never wanted him. So, chase him away as soon as possible.
Ganesh Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:42 PM
Stop Free education and stop giving shit for free.
