Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong has called for a “galloping momentum” in economic cooperation between China and Sri Lanka, likening the nations’ development potential to the strength and vitality of the upcoming Year of the Horse.

Speaking at the Chinese Cultural Night held at the Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone this week, the Ambassador emphasised that the flagship project has evolved into a “vibrant city of the future” and a symbol of enduring mutual benefit.

Addressing a gathering of diplomats and industry leaders, Ambassador Qi noted that the Year of the Horse symbolises endeavour, loyalty, and a “tenacious and indefatigable spirit.”

He expressed hope that bilateral development would “surge forward like steeds covering a thousand miles in a single day,” mirroring the diligent character of the Sri Lankan people and the rapid progress visible within the Port City.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, who attended as the Chief Guest, reflected on witnessing the project’s inception a decade ago. He observed its transformation from a stretch of sea into a flourishing economic hub, affirming the government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative. He added that the partnerships between the two nations are entering a new era of “strength and stamina,” fitting for the year ahead.

During the event, officials from the Port City project company revealed that 2025 marked the beginning of a “Golden Decade” for the development.

According to project representatives, over 100 enterprises have now registered within the zone, and 27 business service institutions have been established. The recent opening of the Business Center and food hub were highlighted as key milestones that have activated commercial footfall, reinforcing the zone’s status as an emerging regional financial center.
