Sri Lanka’s tea production fell 7.8 percent year-on-year (YoY) in August 2025, reflecting a drop across most tea elevations, though the year-to-date figures show a growth, the data from the Tea Board revealed.
Total tea output for August 2025 stood at 19.68 million kilogrammes, down 1.66 million kilogrammes, from 21.34 million kilogrammes produced in August 2024. All elevations recorded declines, with the exception of the green tea segment, which showed a marginal growth compared to the same month last year.
However, the August 2025 output remained higher than 18.36 million kilogrammes recorded in August 2023, marking a gain of 1.32 million kilogrammes.
On a cumulative basis, Sri Lanka produced 176.82 million kilogrammes of tea from January to August 2025, up 4.34 million kilogrammes, from 172.48 million kilogrammes in the same period of 2024. All elevations posted increases over the corresponding period last year. Compared with the same period in 2023, the cumulative output shows a rise of 2.23 million kilogrammes, with all elevations, except High Grown, reporting a positive growth.
