SLTPB-Film Corp.-Cinnamon to position SL as a global film destination

Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts announced the strategic partnership of the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) for its highly anticipated Signature Weekend—a curated celebration of storytelling, cinema and Sri Lanka’s rising prominence as a global film destination.

This partnership marks a significant step in positioning Sri Lanka as a dynamic hub for international filmmakers. With its long-standing support of local cinema, the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka brings both institutional credibility and strategic direction to the event, contributing toward the development of national film infrastructure and creative policy.

Simultaneously, the SLTPB’s involvement reflects the powerful synergy between film and destination marketing. Recognising cinema’s unique ability to shape global perceptions and spark travel inspiration, their support underscores a shared vision to showcase Sri Lanka’s cultural richness and visual allure on the world stage.

Together, these two key institutions signal a national commitment not just to an event but also to the broader goal of cultivating film as a transformative cultural and economic force for the country.

Taking place from May 30 to June 01, 2025, Signature Weekend will honour the acclaimed work of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta and her long-time producing partner David Hamilton, founder of Hamilton–Mehta Productions. Their films—Midnight’s Children, Water and Funny Boy—stand among the most impactful stories filmed in Sri Lanka, bridging global narratives with local landscapes.

The initiative is further strengthened by the support of HSBC Sri Lanka and Mastercard Sri Lanka, global brands that align with Cinnamon’s vision of elevating Sri Lanka as a film-friendly destination. Media partnerships with Wijeya Newspapers (print) and Capital Maharaja Group MBC/MTV (electronic) will ensure islandwide reach and engagement.

Signature Weekend will take place at two iconic venues: the serene Cinnamon Bentota Beach – Signature Selection and vibrant Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams, Colombo. The programme promises an immersive blend of film screenings, panel discussions and cultural exchange.
