Patriotism Beyond Headlines

National disasters should never be used as instruments to advance political agendas or undermine confidence in the country

BY Anura Lokuhetty

In times of national difficulty, the true test of a country lies not only in how crises are managed, but in how responsibly they are communicated.

In recent times, national disasters have been highlighted beyond what is necessary, often without sufficient consideration of the long-term impact such narratives have on key economic sectors—particularly vital foreign exchange earners such as tourism.

Transparency and accountability are essential in a democracy, and the media has a duty to inform the public. However, excessive repetition, exaggeration, and politicisation of crises—especially when projected to international audiences—can erode investor confidence, weaken tourism demand, and damage the country’s global standing. When millions depend on these sectors for their livelihoods, responsible communication becomes a matter of national interest.

Political competition is inevitable, but it must not come at the cost of national stability and economic well being. National disasters should never be used as instruments to advance political agendas or undermine confidence in the country. Constructive criticism strengthens governance; destructive narratives weaken it.

At the same time, those in power carry a greater responsibility. The ruling party must act with honesty, consistency, and genuine commitment to national interest. When failures are exposed, governments should accept them constructively, take corrective action, and introduce measures to prevent recurrence. A willingness to learn from criticism is a mark of strong leadership.

History shows that some nations have progressed rapidly under firm and disciplined leadership that placed the country above personal or political gain. While democratic principles must be preserved, there is a clear need for leaders who are decisive, accountable, and guided by a long-term national vision.

This is a moment that calls for maturity from all stakeholders. Patriotism must go beyond words and be reflected in responsible discourse, sound leadership, and actions that protect the nation’s future.
