Vacancies for two hangmen - 79 applicants to be interviewed

Seventy nine candidates from the 102 applicants have been selected for interviews for the Hangman's Post, Prisons Commissioner General Jayasiri Vijayanath Tennakoon said today.

He said the interviews would be held at the Prisons Department on two days in April.

The Prisons Department said among the 102 applicants was an American citizen.

Mr. Tennakoon said the US citizen would not be called for the interview because only a Sri Lankan would be eligible to fill the vacancy.

He said a special interview board had been appointed to recruit two hangmen and they would be selected after undergoing an academic, physical and mental examination.

“Before we recruit candidates for the post, we need to examine their character and family background. The Prisons Department had two hangmen earlier but they had abandoned their post without notice,” Mr. Tennakoon said.

Earlier, the Prisons Department said they had decided not to publish the identity of those who would be recruited to the post for security and other reasons.

The Prisons Department began calling for applications after the President emphasized on several occasions that the death penalty would be implemented on those found guilty of drug-related offences. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
