The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has taken a historic step by assigning women to sea duties for the first time yesterday (May 11) when the first group of women, which includes two female officers and five women sailors, were attached to SLNS Gajabahu.
This marks a significant advancement in breaking gender roles within the SLN.
The Navy offered the Inshore Patrol Craft Handling Foundation Course in October 2022, during which these women officers and sailors honed their practical and theoretical knowledge of navigation, seamanship, engineering, electricity, combat medicine, firefighting, and communication.
Following the lead of other progressive regional navies, the Sri Lanka Navy is embracing the inclusion of women in sea duties, which is expected to bring full benefits of diversity to national defense in the future.
