Netball coach Jinadasa says players responsible for losses to Singapore at World Cup

Head coach of Sri Lanka’s netball team Thilaka Jinadasa has said the players cannot escape responsibility for losing to Singapore twice at the Netball World Cup in South Africa, which led to their last-place finish in the tournament.

Sri Lanka, the 2022 Asian Netball champions, lost 55-52 to Singapore in the Preliminary Round Stage Two of this year's Netball World Cup before going down 49-46 in the 15th place classification match.

“The players need to take responsibility for these defeats as they did not play well,” Jinadasa said.

“We also lacked the international experience that Singapore had coming into the tournament. We had a four-match series against Botswana in the lead up to the World Cup while Singapore took part in three international tournaments.”

Incidentally, Sri Lanka finished in 15th place at the last World Cup while Singapore finished last.

Sri Lanka had hoped to finish in 13th or 14th place, but the defeat to Singapore meant they finished rock bottom.

“We lost twice to Singapore, who we beat in the Asian Championships. If we had not lost those matches we could have finished in 13th or 14th,” Jinadasa added.

Jinadasa's current stint as national netball coach will end on August 10 and Sri Lanka Netball Federation's executive committee will decide whether or not to extend her term for the Nations Cup International Netball tournament in Singapore next October.

Sri Lanka lost all three of their Preliminary Round Stage One matches, to Jamaica (105-25), South Africa (87-32) and Wales (68-57).

In the Preliminary Round Stage Two, Sri Lanka lost to Singapore (55-52) and Zimbabwe (71-36), with their only victory coming against Barbados (60-56).

Meanwhile, defending champions New Zealand lost to England 46-40 in the semi-finals.

Before blame players ask yourself how much knowledge and technical abilities you have to be a coach in world stage its bit asia cup or local championship. You need to be a top coach compete in world level you might be good enough for to go up to asia not for world stage. Do not blame for players simply to escape and to be continue to be a coach. Learn from mistake and other technical abilities. I don't know you have a certify coaching badge.

More than anything what should be instilled in the players is confidence, you should have told the players that Sri Lanka was 1000 times more superior to Singapore in terms of history, culture , and the number of top Sri Lankan scientists in America. These things may look no correlation to the game in hand but these facts go to the “ confidence “ department and that contributes a lot to the games .

Why all this attention on netball. Even if Sri Lanka beat the worst placed team, according to the coach, instead of 2nd last, team would be 3rd last or 4th last. Really doesn't matter about the failing sports people. Country will only go down further following loser teams like this one, instead of focus on education and improve country in other ways.

The funds for the Netballers can be better used for any number of local poverty relief. The tickets and other costs for these sports people is complete waste of time. All these complaints by the coach is really the coaches lack of capability. Whether the national team comes last, 2nd last, 3rd last or 4th last out of 15 it does not matter. Other countries will always be stronger and better and they have far less poverty. Once poverty is overcome, and the country uplifted then bother about these sports like Netball.

It's always the leader who has to accept victory or defeat.Look at the short comings and and plan accordingly and move on.The players follow the training given by the coach.

OMG ! Sri Lanka has no place in World Netball. We are fifteenth out of fifteen. The only target set seems to be to defeat Singapore which too have been a failure? With Tharjini Sivalingam retiring from the game, there can't be any hopes whatsoever. Is there any purpose in competing in World Tournaments when the country is in dire straits spending all that money?
