Medical Specialists want decision to unmask revoked

While claiming that the decision to suspend wearing of face masks outdoors is unwise, the Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) urged the Government to rescind the decision with immediate effect given the fact that Sri Lankan is not out of the woods as yet in terms of COVID-19 pandemic.

Issuing a special statement, AMS President Dr. Lakkumar Fernando said even though COVID-19 numbers are waning, there are new strains circulating (e.g., Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 in South Africa) in different regions of the world, with potential to cause another wave of infections.

“It is therefore unwise to drop our guard, especially with the current situation in the country. There are daily gatherings of people throughout the country, and there is a scarcity of medicines and other medical reagents,” he pointed out.

“An increase of COVID infections coupled with the inability to provide medical support for those in need would cause havoc, further undermining the deteriorating economic situation in the country,” Dr. Fernando stressed.

Thus, Dr. Fernando on behalf of the AMS reiterated that that the decision on masks be rescinded forthwith, especially at outdoor gatherings. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

The decision of removing the wearing of face mask is a major mistake. In China, some of the major cities are on lockdown for months and we have not restricted people coming from China. Lets remember, we have huge Chinese population working in construction work which has a huge effect on the virus. Further, the government has made the 3rd booster mandatory and how come the Minister declares wearing face mask is not required, unless there is a hidden agenda. However, this will be another big blunder the government is making and they will simply say "sorry", but its the economy the population who will bear the brunt of the affects and not the people who make the decisions. I would still request the citizens to wear the masks for their safety.

It should be a choice. No one can force to wear a mask. Those specialists wanted to lockdown country forever which is one reason for current economic crisis.

To all those anti-mask, anti-vaxx folk out there who are screaming like demented monkeys. Please don't wear your mask, please don't get vaccinated, please do get infected and hopefully you or your elderly lived ones will die. Especially given the health crisis in the country with medicines in short supply. The world is better off without such demented banshees. If the rest of us want to wear masks we will do so. You ate most welcome to go without. Please, please, do.
